Severe storms to deliver strong winds, flash flooding to eastern, central US

Arthur will promote flash flooding and damaging winds along part of the Gulf Coast once again on Friday. The risk for severe weather will return to the center of the nation this weekend.

A tornado ripped part of the roof off of an elementary school and impaled houses with lumber in Blue Mound, Illinois, leaving townspeople with weeks of cleanup.

Following the severe weather outbreak in the Midwest Wednesday, powerful thunderstorms rattled parts of the East Thursday and are forecast to return to the Plains and Midwest over the weekend.

Hundreds of reports of wind damage occurred from Louisiana and Mississippi through West Virginia and Virginia, as well as from upstate New York to New England, as storms moved across the regions Thursday.

A few big storms may continue Friday in northeastern Texas and far southern Arkansas, as well as along the coasts of the Carolinas, Georgia and the northern Gulf Coast. Meanwhile, gusty thunderstorms can occur across portions of the Midwest from eastern North Dakota to western Wisconsin.

A new focus of severe weather will ramp up over parts of the Plains Saturday as a potent storm rolls out of the Rockies.

A surge of warm, humid air over the Plains will collide with a large wedge of cooler, drier air over the Midwest, sparking thunderstorms over the region.

The main threats Saturday and Sunday are expected to be high winds and hail. However, a few tornadoes cannot be ruled out as the parent storm moves from Nebraska and Kansas Saturday to the Ohio Valley by Sunday.

Where downpours overlap from previous days, there will be a heightened risk of flash flooding. This will be a concern particularly across portions of the Midwest and into the Ohio Valley, where there have been repeated rounds of thunderstorms, and additional heavy rain this weekend may increase this risk.
