Severe storms and downpours to pummel Plains to East Coast
Severe thunderstorms packing damaging winds, hail and flash flooding will target the Plains and East through this weekend.
Severe thunderstorms swept across the Northeast on Aug. 27, leading to flash floods that hit New York and New Jersey especially hard.
Areas of heavy, gusty and severe thunderstorms will barrel across portions of the Plains, Midwest and Northeast into next week, disrupting outdoor activities and travel.
Thunderstorms associated with a front that slowly pressed eastward throughout the week stretched from the Southeast to the Northeast Thursday. The heaviest storms occurred from northeastern Virginia to New York, where nearly 100 reports of flash flooding were received.
The front continued to trigger drenching thunderstorms across the East into Friday night, with some storms becoming locally severe. The severe risk will persist into the weekend and beyond.
Below is a day-by-day, region-by-region breakdown of the severe weather and disruptive downpour risks.
This weekend: Severe risk shifts to the Plains and New England
A new disturbance will emerge from the Pacific late this week and shift eastward, bringing a risk of severe weather from northern Utah to portions of the Dakotas Saturday. Hail, damaging wind gusts and localized flash flooding will be possible.
On Sunday, another disturbance will traverse the Plains, bringing renewed severe hazards from northeastern Wyoming through North Dakota and into Canada. The main hazards from the afternoon into the evening hours will be hail, flooding downpours and localized damaging wind gusts as a line of thunderstorms progresses eastward. The highest coverage of severe weather is expected mainly across North Dakota.
Farther east, a new front will swing southward across eastern Canada and New England Sunday, potentially triggering a strong line of thunderstorms with flooding downpours and localized damaging wind gusts of 55-65 mph.
More rounds of thunderstorms are forecast to march from the Dakotas, eastern Montana, western Minnesota to the Upper Midwest and Northeast for much of the new week.
