Damaging winds, flash flooding to roll through the Plains early week

The same storm system that is bringing heavy rain and flash flooding risks to the Ohio Valley and Northeast early this week will also be the culprit for strong to severe thunderstorms across the Plains early week.

Tornado-warned storms dumped rain and hail on Missouri as they tore through the Midwest on July 31, creating these dramatic scenes.

Thunderstorms drenched the Great Lakes, the Ohio Valley and the Southeast this past weekend. Some thunderstorms turned severe, bringing damaging winds and flooding to parts of Ohio, Indiana and the Southeast.

The threat of damaging winds will remain into Monday evening along much of the Eastern Seaboard. However, drenching showers and thunderstorms will continue to raise the risk of flash flooding, especially in New England and the Southeast states. The heaviest downpours are forecast to depart the upper mid-Atlantic Coast early in the evening.

The focus for severe weather is expected to shift back west to the northern portions of the Plains, where thunderstorms are likely into Monday night.

"Another storm moving across Canada will push a cold front across the center of the nation early this week. Thunderstorms developing along the front can produce hail and damaging wind gusts across the Dakotas and Minnesota on Monday," AccuWeather Meteorologist Haley Taylor said.

Tuesday should be largely void of violent thunderstorm activity across the U.S.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, a cold front pushing across the Midwest and Plains will be capable of producing locally severe storms containing damaging wind gusts and hail.

At this time, the greatest threat of severe storms will extend from central Illinois to the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas, beginning Wednesday afternoon.
