Warm, humid weather can help poison ivy spread quickly. Here is how to spot the uneven leaves and thumblike notch before your next outing.

A hiker was airlifted from the tallest mountain in New York after slipping on a wet rock and injuring an ankle, prompting a helicopter rescue.

The incident took place on Monday, Aug. 10, at Mount Marcy, which rises to 5,344 feet in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York.

Around 2:30 that afternoon, authorities were notified of a hiker with a lower-leg injury near the summit. "The hiker had slipped on a wet rock and heard a crack in their ankle," the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said in a statement. "A passing hiker, who happened to be a podiatrist, splinted the ankle."

A New York State Police helicopter flew to the mountain, where a forest ranger secured the injured hiker in a harness before another ranger hoisted them into the aircraft. The hiker was then flown to a hospital.

The Mount Marcy incident was the second rescue Forest Rangers responded to that afternoon.

Earlier in the day, rescuers were called to private property in Otsego County, west of Albany, New York, after a person fell into a steep ravine.

Forest rangers joined local and state authorities to set up a technical rope system, pulling the person approximately 100 feet up the ravine before transporting them from the area.
