How to save money while heating your home this winter

By Staff, AccuWeather

Copied

During the winter, people want to stay warm. They also don't want to pay too much on their heating bill. Here are some ways you can manage your heating bill.

Heating a home can get expensive, and you do not want to spend more than you have to when you are trying to keep your home warm in the winter months. If you can find hacks that will help you save money while keeping your home warm, you should find them and use them to your benefit. Know what you can do to keep your home at a comfortable temperature without spending a ton of money on heat for the place.

Consider Just Heating the Room that You are Spending Your Time In

If you are going to be spending most of your day in your living room, there is no reason for you to heat your whole home. If you have a home with multiple stories, but you find that you and your family are usually only using one story of the house at a time, you should not waste heat on the areas that you will not be using. You should consider using a small portable heating unit that you can set up in the area where you will be spending the most time while at home. You should also consider closing off those areas where you will not be spending any time.

Make Sure that Your Windows and Doors and Fully Sealed

You need to keep the wind out when it is blowing, and the days are cold. You should consider investing in new windows if you feel that the ones that are currently in your home are letting in too much wind. You might purchase a draft stopper to set up by your door to keep the wind from coming in under it.

Make Sure You are Using an Efficient Heat Source

Consider the source that you are using to heat your home and figure out if you are getting the most heat for your money through that source. An outdated furnace or one that is in poor condition might not be providing you with the heat that you want, and it might be costing you a lot of money when you are running it. You should consider paying for a new heating source if your heating bills are adding up quicker than you feel that they should be.

Take Advantage of the Sun When It is Shining

When the sun is shining, it can bring a lot of heat into the home. If you notice that a day is particularly sunny, make sure that you have your blinds open and you let the sunshine into your home. You should check your local forecast to see when the sun is expected to shine and make sure that you leave your blinds open as you head off to work on those days. If you are spending time in your home while the sun is shining outside, find a spot in the house where you can sit with the sun shining on you and feel warm and comfortable.

Layer Your Blankets When You Go to Bed

You might feel the need to turn your heat down when you head to bed to save energy and money. It can be smart to do that, but you need to make sure that you have enough blankets on your bed so that you can layer them up and be warm and comfortable. Know which blankets to cover with first and which you should keep on top for those times when you want to be extra warm.

Wear Warm Enough Clothing Around the House

You should make sure that you are dressing reasonably warm when you are in your home if you want to save on heat. The more clothes that you wear, the less the temperature in the house will affect you. Consider pulling on a sweatshirt when you are tempted to turn the heat up and see if that will help you stay comfortable enough so that you can keep the home at the same temperature.

Making Smart Decisions Can Help You Save on Heat

When you make conscious decisions related to the heating of your home, you can cut back on the amount of money that you have to spend to heat the house. Be smart in the way that you live, and keep your home warm without spending a ton on heat.
