Storms to bring hail, damaging winds to Plains, Midwest this week

Flooding downpours, damaging wind gusts and hail will target parts of the Plains and Midwest into this week as a potent dip in the jet stream moves east.

Severe thunderstorms drenched much of the Northeast on Aug. 20, but parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania and New York were hit especially hard.

An active weather setup across the United States will fuel severe thunderstorms and heavy downpours across portions of the Plains and Midwest through Wednesday night. This comes just days after a large complex of storms produced tornadoes from Pennsylvania to New Jersey.

Below is a day-by-day, region-by-region breakdown of the severe weather anticipated for the first part of this week.

Severe threat continues Tuesday

Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop Tuesday afternoon and evening across portions of the Great Plains from central Nebraska into portions of Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. Flash flooding, hail and localized damaging wind gusts will be the main hazards.

Downpours can lead to travel disruptions, especially along the Interstate 70 corridor.

Another area where some severe thunderstorms are anticipated on Tuesday afternoon and evening will be over the Upper Midwest.

Some thunderstorm activity capable of producing damaging wind gusts, hail and flash flooding will extend from eastern Minnesota to northern Wisconsin and part of northern Michigan.

Hail and damaging winds on tap for Front Range, Midwest Wednesday

Severe thunderstorms are again forecast to develop Wednesday afternoon and evening from eastern Colorado into far western Kansas and eastern New Mexico. The main hazards will be hail and localized damaging wind gusts of 65-75 mph. Denver, Colorado Springs and Pueblo are among the cities within the risk zone.

Farther east, another round of severe thunderstorms is forecast Wednesday afternoon and evening from eastern Illinois through much of northern Indiana and into southern Michigan. Flooding downpours and localized damaging wind gusts of 60-70 mph will be the primary hazards, with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 80 mph. The storms can cause flash flooding, power outages, tree damage and travel disruptions in cities such as Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and South Bend.

More downpours loom for soggy Northeast

A storm near Hudson Bay, Canada, will combine with a storm moving out from the southern United States and lead to drenching showers and gusty thunderstorms in the Northeast from Thursday afternoon to Friday.

Enough rain may fall, despite a few relatively dry days early this week, to lead to renewed flash flooding.

The bulk of the potentially disruptive storms from the Appalachians to the Interstate 95 mid-Atlantic will occur from Thursday afternoon to Thursday night. By Friday, central and eastern New England will bear the brunt of the storms.
