Xmas Tornadoes in FL, Snow in PA
8 PM DECEMBER 25TH
Really quick Christmas Evening update... I thought I would have Internet access this afternoon but I did not.
Tornadoes raked Florida today, injuring at least three people and spawning an F2 tornado, which, according to Fox News, is the first F2 on Christmas Day since 1982. Details can be found on the StormMatrix. The Ledger has an article and photos of the destruction.
The rain across the Northeast started as frozen precip in Central PA around 1 PM. I observed sleet and snow falling for about 20 minutes in Milesburg, PA (see photo below and videos here).
Temperatures in parts of Pennsylvania were still near freezing at 8 PM, while the storm pushed warm readings as high as the mid 60s into southeast Virginia.
Most of the precipitation across the Northeast was reported by government stations as rain at 8 PM. "Unknown Precip" (probably sleet) was falling in parts of New York and New Jersey. Some stations in New York also reported snow and freezing rain.
The AccuWeather.com radar reported more widespread freezing rain or sleet, and snow, and was probably closer to reality.
Much of the precipitation will change to snow Tuesday and Tuesday night, accumulating in the higher elevations.
