WV Power Hits Peak, Huge Battery On
An interesting news tidbit from this week's heat wave: Appalachian Power, which serves the state of West Virginia, hit a new summer peak usage last week, and approached their all-time peak, which was set during the winter of 2004.
PREVIOUS RECORD: 5,953 MW (megawatts)
TUESDAY: 6,280 MW
ALL-TIME RECORD: 7,020 MW
The solution? A huge battery, believe it or not. A 1.2 MW sodium sulfer battery, standing 15 feet tall and 30 feet long, has been commissioned. It "charges up" overnight and can output power during peak periods of the day.
