Winter Attacks Northeast, Now It`s Personal!
Pictorial Update to go with my story below (we're up to 9 degrees at noon!). P.S.: Minneapolis, Minnesota fell to -40, only one degree away from the all-time record low for the state.
ORIGINAL REPORT:
Winter unleashed an all-out assault on the Northeast yesterday, last night and this morning. Winds to near hurricane-force caused blowing and drifting snow and caused traffic accidents across the region, including a 68-car pileup in Northeast PA, and a 36-car pileup near Syracuse, New York, and a 9-car pileup locally. Look for video in this blog entry later this morning.
Temperatures fell below zero with wind Chills dropped into the negative 20's here in Pennsylvania...

But the grand winner for wind chill was -38 F at International Falls, and a wind chill of -56.1 at Grand Marais, MN (UPDATE: Blog reader Barb reports: "Here in Grand Haven, Michigan our local newspaper reported that our resident meteorologist, Will Beaton recorded a wind gust of 57 mph and a wind chill extreme of 57 below around 5:15 a.m. Sunday.")

My personal story (this has been posted to our Forums if you would like to respond): Here in Central PA, I knew it was going to be a bad morning when both garage doors were frozen shut. Then the car thermometer read 0 Degrees when I felt that uncomfortable bump of another car sliding into the back of mine. The local school district decided to be (what would seem) the only district in the state to run without a delay this morning, while my local township didn't treat the roads in my community (sheets of ice). After my daughter waited for 30 minutes in the -23 degree windchill for no bus (assumably slid off the road or wouldn't start due to the cold temperatures - hence the need for a delay), I decided to driver her to school. Not a good start to the week. Thanks for nothing, local taxes.
