Will Late Snow Record Be Broken?
Here in Central Pennsylvania, there's much talk about the fact that it's late January and we've yet to see a significant snow. But tonight, we have a chance. As I write this, snow is gently falling outside my window (and we're 19 degrees here, which is pretty unusual during snow, our high was a mere 23).
6 PM AND 19 DEGREES AT MY WEATHER STATION
THE SNOW STARTS TO ACCUMULATE (7 PM)
The NWS [JessePedia] here in State College has asked that very question. According to them, neither Harrisburg nor Williamsport (the local offical climate stations) have received 1 inch of snow, and Harrisburg hasn't even reported any snow yet. The latest that measureable snowfall was ever seen in Harrisburg was January 23, 1890. Based on the forecast maps below, I think that we're going to miss that record, but only by 1 or 2 days. It's likely that Harrisburg will record measureable snowfall tonight if it doesn't this evening. They've been reporting light snow since 3:45 this afternoon, and since it's 23 degrees there, it's sticking.
We are predicting about an inch in Harrisburg and less than that in Williamsport.
The NWS is officially predicting 0.8" for Williamsport and 1.9" for Harrisburg.
If they don't make it to an inch of snowfall in Harrisburg, then we've got until February 13th, when the latest 1-inch-ssnowfall-record was set in 1992. In Williamsport, we have until February 4th. They are further north and hence less likely to get significant snow tonight.
