Our first really colorful "wildfire sunset" of 2006. drought & record breaking heat look to be making this a bad wildfire summer. Small fires in western Colorado, eastern Utah... makes sunsets & sunrises very colorful.
This article reports that 3,700 acres were burned Wednesday by one fire about 200 miles west of Denver.
The photo above was taken by U.S. Fire Service agent Bob Dyson, of Arizona's "Potato" fire (fires, like hurricanes are named by the government). This website has the most up-to-date information on this fire, which was caused by lightning.
Today's AP Photo of the Day also shows the Potato Fire:

This article notes that another 12,000-acre fire in Arizona (can you imagine? that's almost 20 square miles!) is now 95% contained.
In neighboring Utah, more than 10,000 acres have burned in the last week, according to the Deseret News.
The government's national fire website reports that 93,888 acres are burning nationwide today and nearly 3,000,000 acres have been burned this year... "toasting" the 10-year average of 882,000 and the previous 6-year record of 1.44 million (2002).
Below is a map showing major wildfires as of today (NIFC).
AND AS FOR JULY... our apolgies to the West. Our current forecast shows much-below normal precipitation for the area affected by today's wildfires.
