White Christmas Forecast
We came out today with the first in a series of maps predicting the chance of a White Christmas (snow on the ground on 12/25) nationwide.
The way we do this is... we take a look at the current snow cover (this map is approximate and may not include local conditions):
Snow Cover Today
Then we add areas where snow is expected to fall between now and then:
Forecast Snowfall Area Monday - Saturday
And we adjust for expected melting due to temperatures above freezing.
Voila! Your forecast White Christmas map.
Notice that there are areas in the Northern Plains that won't get it, that should have been a shoe-in. Then again, some places that normally have a 50/50 shot (such as here in Central Pennsylvania) are going to see snow on the ground on December 25th.
If you're interested in how this compares to the "average" year, here is a map showing the average chance of a White Christmas from 1960 to 1990.
