Where`s Outrage on IPCC GW Report?
The media is opening their mouths like so many Hungry Hungry Hippos* this week to swallow the IPCC's new report on Climate Change. Only the IPCC didn't issue the report yet, gives no date when they will, and is withholding the sources that they quote for the short summary [PDF] that they did release.
What's the holdup? Are they waiting for more data? Was the report not really ready? If so then why do all the hype for the Feb. 2nd "release"?
I'll admit -- when reading the Summary, I was impressed by the wealth of evidence that they seem to present, especially the graphs and charts, which could win over some naysayers. But presenting this without citing sources it is something that should not be put up with in the Internet era, and has never been accepted in the scientific world. In my eyes, it discredits the IPCC. Yet when I search on Google News all I see is praise for the content of the summary.
I still don't see the Summary as a smoking gun for human-induced climate change, but I'll hold off on commenting further on the content of the report until, well, the report actually comes out. Probably the final report will contain enough data for either side to quote to still prove their points and the argument will have gotten nowhere.
Since I'm holding off on comments for now, if you'd like to comment on the Summary or report, please don't email me because you'll likely not get a response. Instead, please comment on our Global Warming Blog or The WeatherMatrix Climate Change Forum. See also Laura's comments on the report.
There have been a small number of naysayers who this report has clearly not won over -- for example this guy (who also doesn't cite his sources) or the Wall Street Journal. RealClimate has an article debunking the things that WSJ has said. But this article points out that the Summary has reduced previous estimates of temperature and sea-level increases, dissing Al Gore.
