Weather may have caused mysterious Wisconsin Skittles spill
At 8:51 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, the Dodge County, Wisconsin, sheriff came across "hundreds of thousands of (red, unmarked) Skittles on the roadway." It became an Internet sensation, especially after it was found that the tasty candies were on their way to a farm -- to be fed to cattle as "cheap carbs" -- a process that's been done for years.
This afternoon "Skittles" is trending #2 on Facebook, with 260,000 people talking about them. Why? On Friday (hidden behind the Inauguration coverage), another twist in the story took place and the company issued a statement that said
That mystery aside, putting together the power outage fact with the original post from the Sheriff that said the candies were found "on an icy road," I think it's a reasonable assumption that last week's ice storm was responsible for the power outage. Not only that, but the updated post from the Sheriff blamed the rain for the spill: "Due to it raining at the time, the box got wet and gave way allowing the Skittles to spill out on the roadway."
Either way, I think we can blame this odd event squarely on the weather.
