Weather Briefs: WeatherMatrix.Net, Jim Kosek
No, this isn't something you can buy on Cafepress, it's just a quick update on some things that have been rattling around in my head recently.
1. The website for WeatherMatrix has officially closed and I have posted links there to alternate resources for the information that used to exist there.
WeatherMatrix was a group of online weather enthusiasts that I started in 1996 (I'll post more history here soon). It was the first and largest online weather organization and grew to over 15,000 people around 2005 when AccuWeather purchased it. The name lives on here as the title of my blog and in July the site itself will start redirecting here. All the people who used to hang out there are now here on my blog, on AccuWeather.com Facebook, and especially on the AccuWeather.com Forums and Photo Gallery.
2. You either love him or hate him. AccuWeather.com's Jim Kosek has received a lot of press recently after his Baltimore Blizzard Forecast went viral on YouTube (original shown below). He has over 1,000 members of his Fan Club on Facebook.
Counting the viral video, he has over 2 million hits on YouTube. Here's merely a partial list of places he's been lately:
- YouTube (All Videos) - CNN Headline News (Video) - ABC World News (Video) - Yahoo.com (Screenshot) - Inside Edition - Today's Big Thing- Daily Motion- The Daily What- NPR- Huffington Post- MANY MORE
Some of the articles wondered if he was drunk, I can assure you he's just insane on camera. Seeing Jim in the hallways here at AccuWeather, I can tell you that he's actually a well-mannered, sublime guy off camera.
3. If you haven't already, please check out the new ad-supported AccuWeather.com.
It's not complete, and not everything may work as it should yet, but we're very proud of it and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive so far. I think we really went the extra mile to make this new website a simpler, easier to use, more appealing place that people will enjoy coming to. If you have any comments, please email them to support @ accuweather.com. Notes about My Blog on the new site: The J-CAM and J's Breaking Weather News are now located at the bottom of my most recent blog entry. Comments will return to my blog before we launch the new site March 1st.
