Waterspout, Funnel in Southern Cali
After my report yesterday on a possible tornado near Encinitas, California and my report this morning on continued severe weather there, there have been two waterspouts and a possible funnel cloud spotted again today in San Diego County. Below are the storm reports along with captures from AccuWeather.com RadarPlus showing the radar picture at the time. Here is a radar loop of the event.
1110 AM, 2 MI NW OF ENCINITAS, TRAINED SPOTTER REPORTED A LARGE WATERSPOUT WAS SIGHTED ABOUT 2 MILES OFFSHORE FROM MOONLIGHT BEACH. THE WATERSPOUT LASTED 4 MINUTES AND NEVER CAME ASHORE.
1145 AM, 5 MI NORTH OF RANCHO BERNARDO, NWS EMPLOYEE REPORTED A ROTATING WALL CLOUD WITH POSSIBLE FUNNEL CLOUD SPOTTED OVER ESCONDIDO.
AccuWeather.com meteorologist and Western expert Ken Clark says (PREMIUM | PRO): The action continues to be hot and heavy across San Diego County with numerous thunderstorms coming ashore with strong winds, heavy flooding rain, and accumulating hail. In addition blizzard conditions continue in the mountains with total accumulations near 4-feet in spots before all said and done.
Ken adds this capture from AccuWeather.com RadarPlus showing 3/4 of an inch of rain per hour in some areas of Southern California. Read his blog (PREMIUM | PRO) for additional information on the flooding.
For what it's worth, here is a 2-hour lightning strike display covering San Diego County from AccuWeather.com LightningPlus. There have been about 180 lightning strikes in the past 2 hours.
