Virginia Students Bury Twitter with Snow Complaints
Students in Fairfax County, Virginia got the hashtag #closeFCPS trending worldwide this morning after the district didn't close school and snow snarled traffic.
By 11 AM, amounts were in the 3-4 inch range in some parts of the D.C. area, but when busses rolled this morning, only an inch or two was on the ground, snow spotter reports and social media photos showed:
Why were roads so bad? The temperatures were in the lower 20s at 7 AM; with this kind of cold, the snow didn't melt due to friction of vehicles' tires on the road, and temperatures were close to the threshold where salt won't work. If the temperature had been 30 degrees, this wouldn't have been a big travel hazard.
By the time the school district issued an apology around 10:30 AM, the hashtag was #1 in the United States and #3 Worldwide. I've been monitoring Social Media for years and this is a really big deal; it's hard to get anything trending worldwide, much less something related to weather.
