Two Feet of Lake-Effect Snow
Parts of New York state have been getting pounded today with heavy lake-effect snow as west and southwest winds have traversed the length of the lakes all day (see map at bottom), picking up ample moisture. Below is a radar estimate of liquid (melted) precipitation, showing over 3 inches in some areas. If the normal rain-to-snow ratio of 1:10 held true, that would indicate that over two feet of snow fell in some places.
The following official spotter reports over 10 inches have been issued by the National Weather Service this evening:
ARKWRIGHT, NY: 22.0"
FREWSBURG, NY: 14.0"
ARCADE, NY: 12.0"
MEXICO, NY: 10.5"
WINDS TRAVELED SE TO NE OVER LAKE ERIE
AND WEST TO EAST ACROSS LAKE ONTARIO
ALL DAY TODAY (SURFACE WINDS AT 1 PM)
