ORIGINAL POST:
A tornado outbreak has hit the Northern Plains today... the largest since June, if not further back. Over 20 tornadoes have been reported to the National Weather Service. Some damage is being reported by Google News feeds. Several reports of softball-sized hail (4.25 inches in diameter) have been filed, including this one in Stanton, South Dakota: "LARGEST STONES GRAPEFRUIT SIZE. MANY VEHICLES DESTROYED. BUILDING SEVERELY DAMAGED. REPORT FROM GREAT RIVER ENERGY PLANT." Winds have been as high as 80 mph in these storms. I'm uploading radar loops from AccuWeather.com RadarPlus to this location as we speak.
(LIVE)
The radar is very impressive... as is the lightning! Over 36,000 strikes were detected by AccuWeather.com LightningPlus (image | zoomed image) between 8 pm and 10 pm Eastern Time in southeast Minnesota alone.
