Thursday Unnamed Storm in Technicolor, Webcams

By Jesse Ferrell, AccuWeather meteorologist and senior weather editor

UPDATE 9/26: I'm going to end this debate as I have been validated by stories in the media, including this news article:

If it would have been named, they would have seen it coming. We need to extract ourselves from this scientific debate and provide the media with information that leads to public awareness and safety.
DISCLAIMER: My opinions may not necessarily represent those of AccuWeather, Inc.

UPDATE: My biggest blog detractor has left a Comment below and forced my hand to discuss whether or not this storm should be named. So here I go:

There are many different views on this topic, even within the AccuWeather walls. With the disclaimer that I do not speak for AccuWeather, I believe that all strong storms should be named, if we are going to name any of them. The public does not know what a "cold core" is, they just care that waves are coming in under their house and out into the street, and that they are getting pulled out to sea by rip tides. Yes, we can classify the storms by many different meteorological classifications, but the fact remains that the public will be less prepared for a storm that is not named, and history has seen many unnamed storms do as much or more damage than those named.

Have an opinion? Leave me a comment. P.S.: Our on-location-accidentally-on-vacation Exec has sent in some pictures from Kitty Hawk, NC:

ORIGINAL REPORT:

Here's a look at our Thursday morning Unnamed Storm "in Technicolor" courtesy AccuWeather.com RadarPlus. The NHC [JessePedia], said this in a Special Tropical Disturbance Statement that the storm will probably remain unnamed, but is producing winds in excess of 50 mph, beach erosion, and high surf.

Stats from the Buoys & Ships surrounding the storm are reporting high winds and high waves over a large area. A ship reported sustained winds of 52 mph. Gusts to 55 mph have been reported at ORIN7 (Oregon Inlet Marina, NC) and Buoy #41036 (Onslow Bay, NC). Waves to 19 feet have been reported at Buoy #44014, the Virginia Beach buoy I mentioned yesterday, which is still getting the largest fetch.

One of our execs is vacationing in Kill Devil Hills, I've asked him to send some pictures. The Mirlo Beach cam showed some interesting shots overnight and this morning as dunes washed into the road. Here is a look at Highway 12 this morning (P.S. the sign you see is the same one that I took a picture of in July). Next high tide is at 5 PM.
