This Oct. in History: Earliest Central PA Snow Storm
For a month that is typically dry and sunny in State College, the last few Octobers have brought some whammy storms to central Pennsylvania. In a series of blog entries, I'd like to remember a few of them. Today, I remember the earliest fall snowfall in central Pennsylvania history, which occurred 5 years ago, mid-month.
Synopsis: Heavy, wet snow fell on the autumn leaves (which were still on the trees) in central and northeast Pennsylvania, from Thursday afternoon to Saturday morning. This knocked out power to at least 25,000, many of whom were in Centre County, the home of myself and AccuWeather HQ. We had our earliest significant snowfall in 110 years of record keeping at Penn State. It also set the record for the snowiest October. Light snow was observed as far south as Tennessee and North Carolina!
