The Coming Cold

By Jesse Ferrell, AccuWeather meteorologist

Published Nov 10, 2008 6:03 PM EDT | Updated Nov 10, 2008 8:46 PM EDT

After reading Joe Bastardi's comments today on Bloomberg.com, I was going to open a thread on the AccuWeather.com Forums about the cold snap that he (and other forecasters) expect, but someone had already beaten me to it. Joe says the event will be starting next weekend, almost assuredly extending to or past Thanksgiving, and possibly into December, which he has been saying for months would be a bad winter month.

How could could it be? The GFS model shows frigid, below-zero temperatures at 4 PM on Thanksgiving Eve in the northern Plains! Temperatures in West Virginia and western Maryland and Pennsylvania on November 25th are predicted to be in the 20's.

Of course, this is still at least a week away, so the model could moderate by then. J.B. is using more than just the GFS model and I think his point is that we will be at or below normal for most of the rest of the month, which will come as a shock, especially after last week's warmth in the Northeast.
