Temps Below 0 Over Snowcover in Mid-Atlantic
Due to snowcover and calm winds, temperatures fell below zero in the higher ground in the mid-Atlantic both yesterday morning and today. This time of year you're never sure whether thermometer readings are correct or not, and temperatures can vary widely due to snowcover and wind, but generally thermometers don't bias low.
There were several areas of interest which I have highlighted on the image below. All of this data comes from MESOWEST.
(INTERACTIVE) | LOWS 2/8 (SHOWN ABOVE - INTERACTIVE)
The official National Weather Service station at Staunton, Virginia remained the coldest spot, as it has this winter, with -9 yesterday and today.
Both CW1459 and CW1323 near Hagerstown, Maryland fell to -7 and -4 respectively this morning, even though the official station at the airport was 12.
Although temperatures in Washington D.C. proper were in the teens this morning, they were near 0 as close as Manassass and Warrenton. There were also some below-zero readings in West Virginia at KW99 and CW5158.
Yesterday morning it was -8 at CW9098 and -4 at DW2269, Stormchaser Ron's house in Vinco, PA.
And here in Centre County, home to AccuWeather HQ, I had 2 at my station this morning even though nobody else dropped below 10. Yesterday, AccuWeather HQ was 0 while I was 1.
