Strange Ice Photos
Found a few strange ice photos recently and wanted to post and discuss. First, from AccuWeather.com Facebook Fan Bernadette C.B. On January 24th, she uploaded this photo (and another one) of "Icicle Flocking" to our page:
She says "Flocking is the process of depositing many small "fiber" particles onto a surface. Like the Christmas trees that people spray with white sprays. These house icicles are over my hot water baseboard heating vent. Little particles from the vent are being deposited onto the existing icicles."
I'm going to have to trust her on that because Google doesn't have much info on the term. I wonder if this is similar to the extreme hard, thick frost that you find in old chest freezers, and I also wonder if maybe that's what was happening with the "Snowsicles" photos that I posted last winter?
Next up, crazy ice pictures from Iran via Photo Gallery user drmsaeedi, who is a physician in Mahdishahr. As I understand it, these ice "sculptures" were caused by freezing irrigation pipes during a recent cold snap.
And last but not least, ask and ye shall receive. We polled our Facebook users last week for icicle pics, and they uploaded a boat load (start here and go back a few pages). Probably the best was this one by Fan Justin:
He explains: "Joshua will be asked to approve all tags before others can see them.Help your friends tag photos. You guys said you wanted some icicle pics so here is one from my overhang of my house. Notice the curved format of some of them! As the snow on my roof melts it slowly creeps like a glacier over the eave and the straight icicles eventually touch the house due to this! Kind of like a shark mouth works!"
Here's another pretty but weird photo of what appears to be an ice bubble. I'm clueless on this one. This was in Ohio last week.
