Spring! Heavy Rain, Snow and Storms This Week
There are a number of exciting weather opportunities this week across the nation. I say exciting from a weather enthusiast and statistician point-of-view, but in fact many of them may not be welcomed by the public, such as additional Midwest flooding. As noted yesterday, the GFS Forecast Model [JessePedia]is still predicting 4-8 inches of rain across the flood-ravaged areas of the upper Mississippi River valley (discuss on the Forums).
The crazy weather also includes a Moderate Risk of severe thunderstorms in the Plains and Midwest today (). But get this, a snow storm is also predicted for later this week by the overnight computer model runs (discuss on the Forums). The DGEX model says that anywhere from Illinois to Maine has a shot at significant snow by the end of the week...
And here's a look at the early portion of the storm, courtesy the NMM model, which doesn't forecast out past Thursday yet.The GFS predicts snow fall and snow melt, so its forecast is a little more complicated, but it thinks significant snow is possible for the western Mid-Atlantic & Pennsylvania, as well as most of southern and northern New England.
