Snow in Florida, AccuWeather on ABC Nightline
NEW: See this updated blog entry about cold in Florida, Cuba, and other Caribbean locations and this one regarding the final tally of cold records set by this storm.
First, ABC Nightline aired a pretty fair documentary about the weather industry last night called "Weather Wars" -- you can watch it here.
My only beef was that they said "hurricane" during some classic tornado stock footage. But overall it was a pretty good piece and I was glad to see AccuWeather.com and our Widgets featured.
Second, it did snow and sleet in Central Florida last night. "Sleet and snow fell Saturday morning along the I-4 corridor from the Tampa area through Orlando and Daytona Beach." A radar is shown above.* Check out the reports and pictures on our Facebook page; I'll quote our Twitter Account:
- Sleet has been falling for a couple of hours in Bartow, Fla. Reports out of St. Petersburg also indicate that some sleet has mixed in there.
- Some snow and sleet is mixing in with rain to the north of Tampa, Fla.
- Sleet is falling in Hernando, Fla. Some sleet also fell in Bartow, Fla., during the past hour.
*Official airport observations are a little harder to discern exactly what went on -- the coverage was not as far north as shown on the radar image above because some of that precipitation was not reaching the ground. But officially, station KOBE (Okeechobee) reported snow and TTS, DAM & ISM reported Sleet or "Hail" (Graupel -- essentially a sleet/snow combo). At BKV, BOW, ORL, TPF and VDF they reported "Unknown Precip" which in my opinion usually means mixed snow and rain. LAL reported freezing rain. This is as of 9 AM, when some frozen precip was still being reported. You can download the text obs here or check the animated obs map below.
