Snow in Africa?
International Expert Jim Andrews (PREMIUM | PRO) mentions today on his blog that snow is possible this week in northern Africa:
"A deep late-winter storm, anchored over southern Europe, is driving chilling winds southward from seas off northwestern Europe right into NW Africa. Uplift of this chilly, damp stream by the Atlas is enough to wring out cold rains and snows -- and this is what has been seen today. A few cities started the day with a light (few inches, or several centimeters) snowcover. There will be more cold rain and upland wet snow over northern Algeria, also northern Tunisia, overnight and Thursday."
SNOW COVER 3/21/07
As Jim points out, snow in the mountains of northern Africa is not as unusual as you might think. A snowcover map from the U.S. Air Force (above) shows snowcover of up to 5 centimeters in northern Morocco on the night before last.
