Snow, Ice Hit MWN For 1st Day of Summer
Despite its "World's Worst Weather" slogan, you might think that the first day of Summer would be a good day to hike Mount Washington, NH [JessePedia]. You'd be wrong.
RANDOM MOUNT WASHINGTON PHOTOS FROM OUR PHOTO GALLERY (RELOAD FOR MORE):
Brian Clark, who used to blog from Mount Washington for us (and I hope, will soon be again) said in an email Friday: "We got a couple short preiods of sleet (ice pellets) this morning and then right after our synoptic it started to snow and lasted for almost half an hour (I actually just submitted the observation for that)." Looking back at the official obs, I see that the wind gusted to 77 mph as well on Friday. You can see photos of the snow and rime ice on their website, along with comments from their observers.
How unusual is this weather for them? Snow is rare in the peak of summer, but a measureable amount has been recorded every month of the year there, and with an average HIGH temperature of 54 in July, it's not surprising. You can get a list of their normals, means and extremes here.
