Well, first a winter storm will move through the Tennessee Valley today, spreading heavy rain and also snow on its northern edge.
When it moves into southeast Canada tomorrow and snow exits the Great Lakes, extreme cold and high winds will come down behind it. These high winds will be no joke -- the advisories for Pennsylvania and New York warn: "STRONG WEST WINDS OF 30 TO 40 MPH... WITH GUSTS UP TO 60 MPH... WILL BE POSSIBLE ALONG AND BEHIND THE FRONT... INTO FRIDAY AFTERNOON."
That cold air filtering into the Northern Plains will be the coldest air in all of North America. Again, no joke. The Wind Chill advisories for North Dakota state that "TEMPERATURES WILL FALL DROPPING THE WIND CHILLS TO 40 TO 50 BELOW..."
Two things you don't see on the map:
1. Half of Texas and Oklahoma are covered by Red Flag warnings, meaning that the severe fire danger that has plagued the area this year will continue for the next few days.
2. Winter advisories will go out today from Arkansas to Virginia as a winter storm forms and moves eastward (see map below).
