Scary Thunderstorms March Through East With Wind, Hail
The severe thunderstorms moving through Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky this afternoon are very impressive. I can't remember the last time that massive supercells were marching through the mountains. I was on the phone and in front of the radar when two of our Pennsylvania Storm Chasers intercepted storms east of Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
This severe weather outbreak is more powerful than any we've seen this season in these areas. The lightning is intense (2-hour lightning strikes shown below).
Five Tornado and over 120 Severe Thunderstorm warnings (covering more than 16,000 square kilometers) have gone out as of 6 PM Eastern time.
Wind and large hail reports are widespread. A funnel cloud was reported at Pembroke, Kentucky and baseball-sized hail was observed near Fairview.
