Reed Timmer records close lightning strike in 360 video

By Jesse Ferrell, AccuWeather meteorologist and senior weather editor

Published Jul 6, 2018 3:04 PM CDT | Updated Jul 6, 2018 3:04 PM CDT

Copied

Reed Timmer shot a close (less than 1/4 of a mile away) lightning strike near Halliday, North Dakota, on June 28, 2018, on a 4K 360 fly camera. You can see the (real-time) 360/VR video below:

I wanted to see what it looked like in raw globe format, without rendering it into a 360 video, so you are seeing it correctly, and I wanted to slow it down to see the details of the strike. I used Adobe Premiere to speed up the beginning and slow down the lightning (the thunder afterwards runs at normal speed so you can hear it and see Reed running to his car). Unfortunately when you save from Premiere there's no way to make 360 video players (like YouTube or Windows Movie & TV) play it in the raw, globe format. For this, I had to export via Quicktime, which won't export above 1440p, so I lost half the resolution, but I think it was still worth it.

I'm not sure why but I really like the globe format. I think when I'm in VR I have FOMO (fear of missing out) on what's happening elsewhere in the 360. I also pulled a still photo from the video and enhanced it.
