Record Snowless, Warm December
In addition to my post over the weekend about the snow drought in much of the Northeast, people are talking today over on the WeatherMatrix Forums about the warm December.
And it continues this week -- if you look at the jet stream winds this morning in the Northeast, they are coming straight out of the southeastern Pacific! Don't worry though, I'm sure we'll be complaining about the cold before long.
Forum user thundercloud points out that the NWS in New York City issued this statement about the (literally) snowless month there:
In reply to thundercloud's post, here is a list of how warm the month ended up (departure from normal) for select cities (according to AccuWeather.com Premium's historical weather section):
CITY: DEPARTURE (snowfall)
NEW YORK CITY: +6.3 F (none)
PHILADELPHIA: +5.3 F (trace)
PITTSBURGH: +6.3 F (0.7")
WASHINGTON DC: +4.7 F (trace)
STATE COLLEGE PA: +7.4 F (0.4")

Before you blame it on Global Warming, note on the U.S. map that the West, Plains and Deep South were at or below normal (though not by as much).
And the winner is... believe it or not, the highest departures from normal were in Fargo, North Dakota, where that town remained 13.1 degrees above normal for the month. It's very rare to see a departure in the double digits, and it's even more impressive when you consider that they had a terrible early month cold outbreak, plunging to 9 below zero on the 7th! 5.4 inches of snow fell, slightly below their normal of 7.3 inches.
