Record Records: 4 Fives and Climate Change?
Chris Burt [JessePedia], Author of "Extreme Weather", pointed out to me this week that there have been 5 Daily Precipitation Records set in 5 states during the past year, and 5 new Monthly Precip Records set in 5 states in the last two years.
What does all this mean? Well, if you don't believe in numerology [WIkiPedia] and ignore the 5's, it may lend credence to the idea that climate change is making weather more "extreme," i.e. heavier rain fall in shorter amounts of time. Chris points out that "out of 100 such possible records going back to the 19th century, 10 (10%) have been broken in the past two years!" If this trend continues, we will have broken all of the records in the last 100+ years by 2025 (I think, this is too much math for right after lunch!). Of course, the trend might not continue, and it might be part of living in a cyclical period of more extreme weather, such as the active Atlantic Hurricane period we're in now (which AccuWeather.com Professional's Joe Bastardi [BIO] (PRO) believes is more likely cyclical than unstoppable Global Warming).
