Recent Photos of Hoar Frost
We have had several photos uploaded in the last month depicting hoar frost. Wikipedia defines it as:
I took this photo of my buddy Chris Schmechel* during one of the winters when we were attending college at UNCA. Hoar frost (or was it rime ice?) covered the entire Shining Rock Wilderness area where we were hiking.
Wikipedia adds:
As a meteorologist, I should have known which it was that we encountered that day, but I have to admit that I don't. I've got some additional photos from this day somewhere, I'll have to dig them up.
Here's a sampling of recent hoar frost photos uploaded to our Photo Gallery. You can also see this phenomenon in several photos that our own Brian Clark took up at Mount Washington.

*I credit/blame Chris for being the guy who got me into Internet tools such as FTP, Gopher, Telnet on UNIX & VMS back in the early, early days of the Internet (let's say 1991), then later HTML & the web. Without his geek skills, I would not be where I am today. He worked at Sun Microsystems for many years after we got out of UNCA. Chris' website is here.
