Rarity of Winter Tornadoes, Google Earth Update
UPDATE: Blog reader "Bee" points out that the number of tornadoes has increased considerably since the article below was written. WikiPedia puts that number at 80 twisters. Blog reader "RM" points out that 40% of Gassville, AR (6 mi SW Mountain Home) was damaged. You can find a complete list of tornadoes at the WikiPedia link above, unfortunately I was limited for time so the Google Earth file only covers those locations where there were fatalities initially reported by the NWS, or where I had photos or video.
ORIGINAL POST:
I'm really glad that this article was posted by Reuters. In it, Harold Brooks from The SPC [JessePedia] says: "While this is not a normal event, it's not an incredibly rare event."
The article went on to say:
Also, I have updated the Google Earth KML file showing video and photos of the damage from the Super Tuesday Tornado Outbreak (I did a video blog showing it to you last week, there is a screen cap above). I added pictures from Atkins, Arkansas and Jackson, Tennessee, and reorganized the file approximately by time.
Radar images in the KML file are provided by AccuWeather.com RadarPlus; Video provided by ABCNewsOne. Photos provided by the Associated Press.
