Rad, Sat: Huge Storm To Deck Mid-Atlantic
UPDATE 2PM: The following are the latest snow spotter reports, highest by state. I will be updating this list every 3 hours or so through tonight.
Rutherwood, NC: 9.5" Floyd, VA: 9.0" Duo, WV: 8.5"
As usual I'm overwhelmed with the response we're getting from our Facebook Fans, here are some of their photos and the top amounts:
Rodger M. from Columbus, OH: 3.5" Pamela R. from Franklin, WV: 3.0"
UPDATE: Heavy snow has already fallen in North Carolina, there is a NWS spotter report of 4 inches near North Wilkesboro and 9 inches at Boone, NC on our Facebook Page. People are alternatively calling this storm "The WeatherPerson's Day Storm", "D.C. Snowpacalypse 2.0," and "Superbowl Weekend Storm."
Today's storm system is looking very impressive on radar and satellite, stretching from Mexico (yesterday it even had a Pacific Ocean connection) to Canada, to Bermuda! We've increased the snow amounts on our prediction map and are now projecting two feet in some places. Virginia already declared a State of Emergency yesterday.
It's the third big snow storm to strike the area and places like Washington D.C. and Baltimore could be headed to a record snowfall season (Washington's was 54" in 1899 but they need 27 to reach that). Asheville, NC, where it is snowing again this morning, has already recorded the snowiest start to a season since 1902.
As we move through the storm today and tonight, I'll keep you updated with snow totals. If you'd like your included in my reports, post them to Facebook.com/AccuWeather. Right now the radar is preceding the official observations of precip considerably. Keep an eye on our Forums and Facebook page to find out when our viewers start reporting snow.
