Pennsylvania Sets Cold Records; More Coming
As the models predicted, Pennsylvania set a number of cold weather records Sunday and today, though the extreme cold was not as far south and east as anticipated. You can get the details on my Centre County Mesonet blog, but the highlights are:
- Unofficial stations dipped into the -30s F (the state record is only -42)
- It had never been colder than Sunday afternoon at Penn State (since 1896)
- It had never been colder than this morning in Erie, Pennsylvania
- At noon Monday, some stations in northern and western part of the state were still below zero!

The models say the cold outbreaks are not over -- in fact they are predicting temperatures as bad, or worse, for Friday (less than -35 in the Virginia and West Virginia mountains) and next Tuesday (less than -30 in northeastern Pennsylvania). Those numbers are from the GFS; the Euro model is less extreme (as it usually is) quoting <-20 in Virginia and <-15 in Pennsylvania.
