PA Severe T-Storm 6/22 Photos, Video
UPDATE: I added a couple of new videos of the storm to my archive. In my excitement to document the storm with my new digital camera, I ran the old videocamera on pause, which neglected to record any of the storm's awesome entrance, full of sound and fury (and signifying I had missed the ONE severe storm here this year). The only video that's really interesting is the scud clouds run at 2x normal speed (note: large file, requires Windows), where you can see some updrafts and rotation trying to get going. That video was taken looking southeastward from The Landings (behind the old Murata building for you local yokels).
The CDT has a short article up which says 3,600 lost power (mine came back after an hour or so) in the county, but didn't list whether the frequent lightning strikes, or wind damage was the cause. Wait, check that, they have another article that says trees and powerlines are tangled downtown, so that probably explains it. I was not at all surprised to see the power knocked out; this was a "Midwest" storm, not your typical central Pennsylvania thunderstorm.
ORIGINAL POST:
Here are a selection of photos that I took during tonight's incredible severe thunderstorm which knocked power out to much of the State College area for nearly an hour (but I was still blogging!). Videos are available here (though all significant lightning strikes also appear as photos below), as are radar loops (my location denoted by the "X" furthest east). NOTE on the radar loops, the KCCX radar freaked out as the storms approached, so it's anybody's guess whether it was lowballing or highballing the dbZ levels. The local NWS office said simply: "KCCX is operating in a degraded mode. please use data with caution."
PERMALINK to photos.
More photos and video coming soon.
All photos were taken with my new Kodak Easyshare Z650 Digital Camera. The lightning strikes were captured from paused Quicktime video taken with the camera.
I also thought this series of photos from my "driveway cam" were interesting:
7:29 PM: A seemingly normal day...
7:39 PM: Dark clouds appear in upper-right hand corner...
7:44 PM: Gets insanely dark & rainy; "dusk" lamp post turns on
After that... the power went out.
