Opinions, Hype on Historical Noreaster
We used the term "potentially coast-altering storm" on one of our graphics today, which is interesting. This means that we think this is going to be a really, big, bad Nor'easter with severe beach erosion and storm-surge usually reserved for hurricanes. Here's some of the Forecast Models [JessePedia] hype behind those warnings. All these maps were obtained through our AccuWeather.com Professional website.
The WaveWatch model shows 24-foot waves offshore and 18-foot waves hitting the coast of Massachusetts...
And sustained winds over 50 knots (58 mph) on shore...
The NMM has a sub-984mb low pressure system hanging around over Mass. for more than a day...
The GFS goes deeper (sub-980mb, 28.93") but doesn't keep it around for long.
What it all adds up to as far as snowfall is concerned, is 1-2 feet of snow in parts of New York but an inch or less for the major cities, according to the GFS 10:1 Snow Ratio [JessePedia]:
However you slice it, it's going to be one ugly Boston Marathon on Monday... even if it's not snow or sleet it's going to be a brutal wind-driven rain.
Meteo Madness Man (PREMIUM | PRO) is talking 25" snow, power outages and tropical-storm force winds.
AccuWeather.com Professional's Joe Bastardi [BIO] (PRO) says:
Lest you think it's just us that's hyping this potential for this Nor'easter, the NWS in New York City is calling it an "INTENSE... HIGHLY ANOMALOUS STORM" and warns:
