Oh The Irony: Carolina Tornado Warnings
At 2 PM today, the NWS issued this Tornado Warning for Alexander County in North Carolina, saying "...TRAINED WEATHER SPOTTERS REPORTED A FUNNEL CLOUD 4 MILES SOUTHWEST OF TAYLORSVILLE..."
I grew up right across the Alexander County line in Wilkes County, about 10 miles from where this funnel cloud was sighted. And the irony (as a severe storm enthusiast) is that I will be there one week from today (apparently a week too late!) The map below from AccuWeather.com RadarPlus shows where I grew up as the "X" and the Tornado Warning as the red box (spittin' distance as we would say in NC).
I think Mom's not home today, but I take the fact that the webcam's still uploading as a good sign. Looks wet there, but no trees are missing. She was far enough north of the storm, and far enough south of the one that caused a Severe Thunderstorm Warning earlier for Wilkes County. I tell you what, between Mom's house and mine here in Central Pennsylvania, my cell phone has been going off all day with severe weather advsories from AccuWeather.com Messenger.
And then in Wake County, home to Raleigh, NC, where I used to live, two Tornado Warnings were issued shortly later this afternoon. The "X" on the map below shows were I used to live; the red boxes again denote the Tornado Warnings:
