Obituary: Saffir, Hurricane Damage Expert
Herbert Saffir, credited with creating the SS scale [AccuWeather] [WikiPedia] of hurricane intensity died today of surgery complications at the age of 90.
The scale, which ranks hurricanes from Categories 1 through 5, was created by Saffir in 1969 and expanded by Robert Simpson, NHC director, in the 1970's. Simpson is now 95 years old.
