O.T.: Good Idea: Trash for Electricity
Now here's an idea that makes sense: Vaporize your garbage and use the gas to power turbines which create electricity. Use the slag left over to build roads. Check out the article at USAToday. This article says the plant will power nearly 50,000 homes.
If this were done nationwide, we'd have the equivalent of 25 nuclear power plants (and no landfills in a few years). There are skeptics of course, but that's not stopping Geoplasma from trying it in St. Lucie, Florida (first time in the U.S.). It may have cost $425 million but they'll run on their own electricity and make money off the sale of electricity and slag.
There's nothing on their website but a promotional video, which is a little suspicious -- or else it means they're company consists of only the elderly gentlemen who speak in the video.
