O.T.: 12 Planets in the Solar System
ABCNews reports today that a new proposal by European eggheads will proclaim once and for all that, not only is Pluto really a planet (the article mentions some controversy), but there are three others:
Xena (aka 2003 UB313), the furthest object in the solar system
Pluto's largest moon Charon
The asteroid known as Ceres
So, the new lineup would be: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Charon, Xena*
The idea of "9 planets" has been in textbooks for years, but it sounds like (pending a vote from a committee) that it might be time to get out your school science books and a red pen; it's time to make some corrections.
