Northern Tier Plummets to -38
The northern tier of the United States was frigid Monday morning, with a station in Minnesota plunging to -38 degrees. Temperatures in Pennsylvania fell to -10 while Long Island was in the single digits. Hundreds of thousands of school children got the day off and 10,000 AAA calls were recorded in Michigan alone (Forbes.com).

Locally here in Central Pennsylvania I observed -5 at one thermometer at my house and -3 on The New Car thermometer on the way here.

Mount Washington [JessePedia] was only -24 but they had a wind of over 100 mph to make up for it, creating a wind chill of -77.
The core of the cold air had not made its way as far south as North Carolina, where Mount Mitchell reported -2 and Grandfather Mountain said 2 above this morning.
