North Carolina Frigid, Kentucky Below Zero
The low temperatures this morning around my old stomping grounds in the northern foothills of North Carolina (shown as an "X" below) were very impressive for this early in the Winter - or wait, it's still Fall. Wilkesboro, NC reported +8.6 F which beat my low temperature here in Pennsylvania last night, owing to calm winds there.
According to AccuWeather records, the 9-degree reading at Salisbury, NC, if confirmed, will break the daily record low for the day, which was set 112 years ago! The only other single-digit temperatures recorded there in the first half of December were during the cold outbreak in 1962. Map below courtesy MesoWest.
Parts of Kentucky (including Monticello) and the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina were below zero. Mount Mitchell, North Carolina struggled to get above zero yesterday and was -8 this morning. Mount Leconte, Tennessee reported -9 this morning with their "high" yesterday coming in at -5!
