NASA Spies Hottest Place on Earth
Historically, instrumentation has been the official measurement tool for meteorologists. This may change in the future. One of NASA's satellites that detects the Earth's temperature (MODIS) has spied temperatures of 159 degrees F in the Lut Desert in Iran. Of course, this is surface temperature, rather than 2-meter (6-foot) temperature that serves as the meteorological standard. They don't go into the science of what it's really picking up (sand, I assume, but what about metal / asphalt cities?)
