More Florida and Caribbean Cold
UPDATE 12/30: *I have updated the number of records below to include Wednesday. From Joe Bastardi's Facebook Page:
I blogged earlier this month about the unusual cold in Florida and the Caribbean. They have endured their third cold snap now, and are once again setting daily (and probably monthly) records. The cold has not reached the lower Caribbean yet, but Freeport, Bahamas fell to 40 degrees on Monday, one degree lower than during last January's historic cold outbreak.
Here are some additional tidbits:
- According to AccuWeather.com records, Freeport in the Bahamas was only one degree from the coldest temperature ever (officially) observed in the country on Monday.
- According to the NCDC, 46 (*now 75) daily low temperature city records were broken in Florida Monday and Tuesday; 52 (*now 56) low maximums were as well.
- *Over 20 of those records were broken by 5-7 degrees!
- Up until yesterday, Stuart, Florida had never experienced a December day where the temperature failed to get above 50 F (during their 73 years of record).
- High Springs, Florida tied its record of 38 degrees Monday for the all-time coldest afternoon ever, in any month.
Additional information from the National Weather Service is available via their Southern HQ and Miami NWS Office [PDF], who says:
"Three very strong cold fronts have pushed across South Florida this month. Low temps this morning were 18 to 25 degrees below normal! Temperatures for December 2010 have been averaging 8 to 10 degrees below normal. This looks to make December 2010 one of the coldest December’s on record for South Florida, likely even the coldest at some locales."
Below is a map showing temperatures this morning, when additional records were broken. I'll update this blog entry tomorrow to change the count above, when the official NCDC data comes out.
