Monster Heat Wave: SD 115, PA 100
This weekend's massive heat wave has been in the news all week. So how hot will it get? I've checked out the maps and have the results of forecasts from AccuWeather.com and the government-run National Weather Service. Both agree that extreme temperatures over 110 will hit the northern Plains today and parts of Pennsylvania will near 100 on Monday. Heat advisories have been issued for sixteen states. Here's the scoop:
First, on a national basis, AccuWeather.com predicts that Sunday will be the hottest day with every state in the nation over 90 degrees Sunday afternoon:
But the hottest weather overall will be in the Northern Plains today. AccuWeather.com is predicting a temperature of 46 C (115 F) in the western part of South Dakota late this afternoon. (The state's all-time record is only 120).
The NWS predicts 113 for Pierre, SD this afternoon:
The next hot spot will be northeast Pennsylvania on Monday afternoon, which AccuWeather.com predicts will be 99 degrees F (37 C):
Here in State College, PA, we are predicting 96 degrees, which will break the record of 94. The NWS takes it one step further, predicting that the temperature will be 100 in PA on Monday:
And finally, a word about southwest Alabama, which will be the hot spot of the South on Monday. AccuWeather.com is predicting 99 degrees:
The NWS is saying temperatures will be well over 100 in Alabama (notice the "99" is only orange):
But let's not forget southeast Canada, which will not be immune from the heat wave, also hitting the upper 90's. Here is a graphic illustrating the predicted highs vs. the records, which will probably be broken in Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto.
