MN Bridge Collapse - Weather Related?
A large bridge in Minneapolis, MN has collapsed; turn on your TV for live aerial views from any news station. One of the first questions people ask is if the weather could have played a part. Bridges typically collapse due to earthquakes, but of course the famous Tacoma bridge collapse was cause by high winds.
Today's disaster happened around rush hour Wednesday, at which time (according to AccuWeather.com) the emperature was at its highest for the day, 92 degrees, and winds were brisk, at 19 mph, also the highest for the day. The high of 92 was 9 degrees above normal and was the 11th day of above normal temperatures. Storms were approaching the city, but had not yet arrived.
At this time I would say that the cause lies more likely with the construction ongoing or simply the age of the 30-year old bridge, rather than the weather, but I will post more information when it becomes available.
