Midwest 'slizzard' drops half a foot of sleet
As noted in "Incredible Sleet Stories Volume 2," I believe that sleet amounts over 4 inches are rare enough to be notable. While the sleet and snow storm that passed from Iowa to New York yesterday through this morning was not as widespread as the March 3, 2014 storm, it dropped some impressive amounts and included something rarely observed: 'drifts' of sleet up to 6 inches caused by high winds up to 60 mph!
Here are the amounts that were submitted as spotter reports (reports with a dash are the range from the report, presumably an average, to the drifts):
Bauer, MI: 3-6" Kentwood, MI: 2-6" Grandville, MI: 2-5" Mattawan, MI: 2-4" Benton, IA: 4.5" Chittenango, NY: 3.3" Crystal Lake, IL: 3.2" Batavia, IL: 3.0"
The radar animation below shows sleet (and freezing rain) as pink.
